Abstract

1478740 Processing silicon steel ALLEGHENY LUDLUM INDUSTRIES Inc 22 Sept 1975 [18 Nov 1974] 38766/75 Heading C7A [Also in Division B3] Steel containing in percentage by wt. C - 0À07 Si 2À6 - 4 Mn 0À03 - 0À24 S and/or Se 0À01 - 0À09 (#0À01 Se) Al 0À015 - 0À04 N - 0À02 Cu 0À1 - 0À5 Fe is hot rolled, cold rolled in one or more stages with an anneal before the final stage, which latter must effect a reduction of at least 80% in thickness, decarbarized and finally annealed to produce a cube-on-edge orientation yielding a permeability of at least 1850 G/oe at 10 Oe. The anneal preceding final cold rolling is carried out at 1400 - 2150‹F for 15 seconds to 2 hours followed by cooling to a temperature in the range 1700‹-750‹F at a rate not exceeding that in a static atmosphere or a continuous processing line with no intentional atmospheric motion, and then quenching from that temperature to below 500‹F with liquid or a gas stream. Where annealing is carried out in the range 1400‹-1700‹ F the quenching may be directly applied.
