Abstract

A method for protecting the surface of tantalum or niobium metal against oxidation comprises the steps of (1) treating it at a raised temperature (e.g. 200-500 DEG C.) with a vapour of a nitrogenous hydride of the general formula <FORM:0933971/II/1> in which R1 is a hydrogen atom, an NH2 radical, an alkyl or aryl radical or a heterocyclic residue; (2) leaving it to cool in an atmosphere of the vapour; and (3) vacuum degasifying the product. Suitable compounds of the above formula are ammonia, hydrazine and n propylamine. The treatment is des
