Abstract

Niobium or niobium based alloys are coated with cobalt silicide or disiticide. In an example a Nb-Ta-W-Mo alloy is heated at 760 to 1204 DEG C. for 1 to 24 hours in a cobaltizing pack comprising (per cent by weight) 15 cobalt, 6 NH4Cl, and 79 Al2O3. Alternatively Co(NH3)6Cl3 may be used. The powder is contained in a steel or graphite can which is rotated at 1 r.p.m. The cobaltized alloy is then heated at 1093 to 1316 DEG C. for 2 to 4 hours in a pack comprising (weight per cent) 17 silicon, 3 NaF, and 80 Al2O3. To improve the maximum temperature properties of the coated body, the surface layer of COSi2 is depleted by heating in oxygen, heating in a vacuum, etching, machining, vapour or sand blasting, and by a decomposition reaction.
