Abstract

In a method of coating metallic powders with another metal having a melting point above 500 DEG C., the metal powder, which is not more electro-positive than aluminium, is heated in the presence of the vapour of a halide, preferably the chloride, of the coating metal. The halide of the coating metal may be produced by heating it in the presence of ammonium chloride, a hydrogen halide, preferably hydrogen chloride, a gaseous organic halide or the vapour of a normally liquid or solid organic halide and an oxidizing gas which does not react with the metal powder except by oxidation, carburization or decarburization. The coating metal may be chromium, molybdenum, tungsten, titanium, zirconium, niobium, tantalum, manganese, aluminium, cerium or silicon and the coated powders may be cobalt, nickel, iron, steel, copper, tungsten, molybdenum, aluminium, tungsten carbide or molybdenum carbide. The temperature of the treatment is between 400-1400 DEG C. Specification 577,504 and U.S.A. Specifications 1,853,369 and 1,992,549 are referred to.
