Abstract

A basis metal is coated with Al or Al-base alloy by treatment with vaporous Al sub-chloride (AlCl and/or AlCl2) which has been produced by reacting a vaporous chloride of a foreign metal (defined as a metal other than the basis metal and Al, and to include Si) with Al or an Alalloy at a temperature above 500 DEG C., the sub-chloride having undergone no cooling to below the temperature of the treatment of the basis metal between the time of its formation and the time it is used in said treatment. Preferably, the foreign metal chloride, which may for example be SiCl4 and/or TiCl4, is carried in a current of inert or reducing gas over the solid, or through the liquid, Al or alloy thereof, the sub-chloride thus formed being fed in the carrier-gas to the basis metal. Suitable Al alloys for reaction with the foreign metal chloride are the aluminides of Si, Fe, Ni, Ti, Zr, and Mo. Coatings may be formed on Fe, alloy steels, Ni, Cr-Ni alloys and Mo and alloys thereof. Two specific examples of the process are given. If the basis metal is in pulverous form it may be converted wholly into an alloy of the basis metal and Al by extended treatment with the sub-chloride. An example discloses the conversion of Mo powder into Mo aluminide powder.
