Abstract
<PICT:0972183/C6-C7/1> A collimated arc process for depositing metal or alloy coatings other than tungsten, zirconium, tantalum and nickel-chromium-boron alloys having a melting point greater than 500 DEG C. on a metal workpiece comprises the steps of striking an arc between an electrode 6 disposed in a chamber, and a nozzle electrode 7 which defines a restricted outlet 8, supplying an inert monatomic gas (e.g. A) round the arc to form an arc-gas stream which issues from the outlet 8 into an expansion and mixing chamber 12, where a powder of the coating material is supplied from an inlet 13, and directing the arc-gas-powder stream on to the workpiece. Coating powders mentioned are stainless steel (containing for example 18% chromium and 8% nickel), titanium and titanium alloys such as Ti + 8% Mn, Ti + 6% Al + 4% V, and Ti + 5% Al + 3% Mo + 1% B. The workpiece may be pickled before coating.
