Abstract

Articles such as drawing and extrusion dies, sand blasting nozzzles, electric heater bars for furnaces, refractory blocks, crucibles, and particularly venturi tubes and combustion chambers for rockets, are given a coating of a refractory carbide by reacting a metal capable of forming a hard refractory carbide, or a salt or oxide thereof, with the heated surface of a fabricated carbon support. The carbon support and metal or metal compound, such as titanium chloride, may be heated together, the metal or compound volatilizing on the carbon surface; or, the metal, such as titanium, or compound may be mixed with a binder, such as a resin in ethyl alcohol, and a thin coating applied to the carbon which is then heated; or, the metal or compound, in a powdered form, may be packed so as to occupy the cross-section of the carbon support, and the assembly is then heated. The heating may be effected under reduced, normal or superatmospheric pressure, a pressure of less than 10 mm. Hg, and heating at 1600-2000 DEG C. for 20-28 minutes being preferred. The metals specified as forming the said carbides are zirconium, niobium, molybdenum, hafnium, tantulum, tungsten and titanium.ALSO:Articles such as drawing and extrusion dies, sand blasting nozzles, electric heater bars for furnaces, refractory blocks, crucibles, and particularly venturi tubes and combustion chambers for rockets, are given a coating of a refractory carbide by reacting a metal capable of forming a hard refractory carbide, or a salt or oxide thereof, with the heated surface of a fabricated carbon support.
