Abstract

A graphite container for molten metals, particularly adapted for melting titanium and its alloys, is provided with a refractory lining composed of the carbide or carbides of niobium and/or hafnium. The lining may be obtained by applying the carbide or carbides and sintering under pressure, or by application of the metal or metals which are then caused to combine with the graphite to form the lining, or by application of niobium foil having hafnium carbide sintered to one face, the other face being placed next to the graphite so that on heating to about 1750 DEG C. an interface of niobium carbide is formed. The lining may consist essentially of hafnium carbide with a small amount of niobium carbide as binder.
