Abstract

820,733. Refractory materials. STAHLWERKE SUDWESTFALEN A. G. Dec. 8, 1955 [Dec. 8, 1954(2)], No. 35293/55. Class 22. [Also in Group XII] A furnace for melting metals or alloys, e.g. iron or steel or steel alloys, at reduced pressure, is provided with a lining that gives up no oxygen to the melt, the lining being manufactured by tightly packing dry fused magnesia granules around a core, placing the granules and core in at atmosphere of low oxygen content produced by reduced pressure and/ or a protective gas, i.e. a gas which at higher temperatures does not contain free or available oxygen, and heating the core to sinter the layer of granules around it. In the form illustrated, the sintering core 4 is of graphite which is separated from the surrounding magnesia granules 5 by corrugated cardboard or paper 6. An induction furnace inside a water-cooled induction coil 1 heats the graphite core causing the corrugated cardboard or paper to burn thereby facilitating the escape of gases from the bottom of the core through the gap formed between the core and granules. Heating is increased to 2,000‹C.-2,500‹C., whilst the furnace is under vacuum, until sintering occurs.
