921,484. Metal melting furnaces. UNITED KINGDOM ATOMIC ENERGY AUTHORITY. Sept. 2, 1960 [Sept. 21, 1959], No. 32046/59. Class 51 (2). [Also in Groups XI and XXII] Apparatus for vacuum melting and casting uranium comprises high-frequency induction coils 1 defining a heating cavity 2 enclosing a crucible assembly 3 with a bottom pouring outlet 4, supporting structure 5 for the coils and the crucible assembly, a carrier 6 for casting moulds, and a removable vacuum sealing envelope 7 enclosing all the aforementioned items, the crucible assembly being supported on a platform 8 so as to be insertable into or withdrawable from the base 9 of the heating cavity on removal of the envelope. The coils 1 are disposed between an outer sleeve 19 and an inner refractory lining 20, e.g. fireclay, with end closures 21 of asbestos insulating board. The crucible assembly 3 comprises a graphite crucible 23 and tundish 27, the former being sealed by a graphite plug 15 released by a graphite rod 13 actuated by a rod 59 through a lever system 14. On release, the graphite plug 15 floats to the top of the metal which fills the tundish and then the moulds. The platform 8 is held by sliding bolts carried in brackets attached to the structure 5 and having adjustable feet engaging said platform. An extraction hood 61 disposed over the crucible is connected to a vacuum source by duct 63, and has a graphite condensing plate 67 located close to the top of the water-cooled envelope 7 and protected by a spaced baffle plate from the molten mass in the crucible, Fig. 4 (not shown). The platform 8 carrying the crucible assembly and its cold contents is transported and manoeuvred into position by a fork lift truck.
