Abstract
812,216. Crucibles. GERAETEBAUANSTALT OF BOLZERS. Jan. 9, 1957 [Jan. 13, 1956], No. 830/57. Class 82(1) [Also in Groups XI, XII and XXII] A device for tapping fused material e.g. molten metal from a furnace, the crucible or casing of which containing the charge has a tapping hole in the bottom, comprises a tapping funnel (7) extending from the said hole and closable by a slide plate (10), and separate heating means (4, 8) for the charge and for the material in the funnel allowing the said charge and material to be fused independently of each other, whilst the said casing containing the charge or a furnace casing enclosing the said crucible and funnel may be evacuated or filled with a protective gas. In tapping molten metal from crucible 2, first the orifice of the funnel 7 is closed by water-cooled (at 11) slide plate 10 and only the material in the crucible is fused by heaters 4; then material in the funnel is fused by heaters 8, the orifice is opened and the material poured into mould 22, pouring being stopped as desired by closing said orifice and allowing the material in the funnel to solidify. In Fig. 1 induction heating is shown. Fig. 2 shows the use of resistance heating for the funnel material via electrodes 33 (lead 43) and 34, the former serving as outer cover for the funnel and the latter being adapted to be dipped into the molten material in crucible 29 (heated by induction coils 26). as and when necessary. Cooling coils 45 may be asociated with the funnel 30, (7), and the whole assembly including the mould 46, (22), may be enclosed in an airtight casing 24, (1), for use in vacuo or with a protective atmosphere. Fig. 3 shows an arrangement of electrodes 52, 53, 54 for melting the material in the furnace 50 by 3-phase arc heating, one of the electrodes being slidable to dip into the molten metal as required in order to co-operate with electrode 58 in the resistance heating of the material in the funnel 56.
