Abstract
871,659. Degassing molten metals. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A. B. July 7, 1959 [July 11, 1958], No. 23249/59. Class 72 A method of degassing molten metal in a container comprises vacuum sealing and evacuating the container and stirring the metal by an electromagnetic polyphase stirring winding and, if required, maintaining the temperature of the metal during the process. As shown, applied to an electric arc furnace, the furnace roof 2 is removed and replaced by a cover 3 of greater diameter, the doors 7 and spout 6 are closed by vacuum tight flanges 8 and a cap 9 respectively, the furnace connected to a source of vacuum through an opening 15, and an electromagnetic stirring device 11 arranged below the furnace. When a ladle is used the cover may carry an electrode for arc heating or may be provided with electric resistance elements. The stirring device may also be arranged to heat the metal inductively as well as stirring.
