Abstract

In a process of diffusion-coating a metal with another metal in which the metal to be coated is heated in the presence of a halide of the coating metal in a closed container which is subsequently cooled, an inert gas (i.e. a gas which is neither oxidizing nor reducing and which does not enter into any reactions taking place during the process) is allowed or caused to enter the container as least during the cooling thereof. The metal to be coated may be iron, steel, nickel, copper or an alloy thereof; the coating metal may be aluminium, antimony beryllium, bismuth, chromium, cobalt, lead, manganese, molybdenum, nickel, silicon, tin, titanium, tungsten, vanadium, zinc, zirconium or an alloy thereof; and the inert gas may be nitrogen or argon. The container may be a gas-tight box or a "sealed" box (i.e. a box provided with a channel to receive the lid and sealed by a substance such as glass which is fusible at the operating temperature) which is heated in a furnace, and inert gas may also be supplied to the container during heating. In the examples, mild steel pieces are de-ionized by being packed in a mixture of ferrochrome, kaolin and ammonium iodide.
