Abstract
A titanium-base alloy has the following composition: C 0.1-1.0 per cent, Mn 0.1-20.0 per cent, Ti, and impurities the balance. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements: Si 0.1-1.5 per cent, Al 0.5-6.0 per cent, V 0.1-1.5 per cent and B 0.1-1.5 per cent. The alloys may be made by mixing powders of the constituents other than carbon and melting in a graphite crucible in an inert atmosphere, the amount of carbon absorbed from the crucible being controlled by the length of time the melt remains in contact with the crucible. Castings may be hot forged at about 870 DEG C. The alloy may be hardened by heating at about 1000 DEG C and quenching. It may be then softened by heating at about 800 DEG C and slowly cooling.
