Abstract

A heat-treatable steel has a composition within the following range in per cent by weight: C 0.24-0.35; Mn 0.95-1.4; Si 0.4-0.6; Mo 0.2-0.35; V 0.029-0.07; B 0.0025-0.003; S up to 0.05; P up to 0.05; Fe and impurities the balance. The steel may contain residual Cr which together with Mn is within the range 0.95-1.4, the minimum Mn being 0.95. An example is given containing Ni 0.09. In heat treating the alloy it may be charged to a cold furnace, brought up to 1800 DEG F. in 3 1/2 -4 hours, held at that temperature for 3 hours, cooled in the furnace to 1600 DEG F. over about 1/2 hour, held for 1 hour then quenched in agitated water. When charged to a hot oven the alloy is heated to 1500 DEG F. and held for 1 hour before continuing treatment as given above. Heavy sectioned castings may be heated at 1500 DEG F. for 1 hour, then to 1750 DEG F. for about 5 hours, then cooled in air and tempered at 1050 DEG F. The alloys may be used in gears, pinions, sprockets, digging machinery and other equipment where strength, toughness and wear resistance are required.
