Abstract
An aluminium base alloy consists of, in addition to aluminium, copper 1.5-2.25 per cent., nickel 1.8-2.3 per cent., magnesium 0.65-0.85 per cent., manganese 0.8-1.2 per cent., molybdenum 0.2-0.3 per cent. The molybdenum may be wholly or partly replaced by tungsten, the ratio of tungsten used to molybdenum replaced being 2.2 to 1. The alloy may also include the following: iron up to 0.7 per cent., silicon up to 0.6 per cent., titanium up to 0.2 per cent., and cobalt up to 0.5 per cent. The alloy may be made by first forming suitable binary alloys with aluminium of all the other metals except magnesium, melting about 75 per cent. of aluminium metal with the necessary amount of aluminium-nickel alloy, to form a melt having a temperature of 780 DEG C. to 800 DEG C., then adding the total necessary amount of aluminium-molybdenum alloy and/or aluminium-tungsten alloy (in that order when both molybdenum and tungsten are used) followed by the total necessary amounts of aluminium-manganese and aluminium-copper alloys in that order and the balance of the aluminium. The melt temperature is maintained at 680-770 DEG C. and the magnesium, in metal form, is added. Where a proportion of scrap alloy is to be used, about 50 per cent. of the aluminium metal is melted with about 50 per cent. of the aluminium-nickel alloy. About 50 per cent. of the other binary alloys are then added in the above-mentioned order. The scrap is then added followed by the remainder of the binary alloys and the balance of the aluminium in the above order, and when the melt temperature is 680- DEG 770 DEG C. the magnesium is added. A suitable heat treatment for the alloys involves heating to 550-585 DEG C. and rapidly cooling followed by ageing at 120 DEG -220 DEG C. for from 4-36 hours and allowing to cool. A preferred heat treatment is at 570 DEG C. (\sB5C DEG ) for about 6 hours followed by quenching in water or oil or air blast, re-heating for about 12 hours at 190 DEG C. (\sB5C. DEG ), and cooling in still air.
