Abstract
537,404. Alloys; heat treatment. COOK, M., ALEXANDER, W. O., and IMPERIAL CHEMICAL INDUSTRIES, Ltd. Sept. 19, 1939, No. 26128. [Classes 72 and 82 (i)] In the manufacture of corrosive-resistant copper-base alloys, suitable for condenser tubes or ferrules and other articles, aluminium bronzes containing 1-12 per cent. of aluminium, and 0.05-1.0, preferably 0.2 to 0.5, of chromium are heated to between 700‹C. and the melting point, e.g. between 800‹C. and 900‹C. for an hour, so as to bring the whole or a substantial part of the chromium into solid solution and then rapidly cooling the alloy to retain the chromium in solid solution. The alloys may contain up to 10 per cent. of nickel, e.g. 3-5 per cent. and up to 5 per cent. of additional elements or impurities such as manganese, zinc or iron. In the manufacture of the alloy, the chromium may be introduced into molten copper in the form of a copper-chromium hardener, which may contain aluminium, and the requisite quantity of aluminium added after the hardener has dissolved in the melt. The alloys may be subjected to hot and/or cold working prior to the heating.
