Abstract

Aluminium-silicon alloys contain 1-8 per cent of copper, 0,1-3 per cent of cobalt, 0,1-5 per cent of magnesium, and up to 2 per cent of iron, with or without up to 0,5 per cent of one or more of the metals cerium, niobium, titanium, molybdenum, and chromium, and are subjected either to a single low-temperature heat-treatment, or to a two-stage heat-treatment which may comprise heating for 2-20 hours at 500-530 DEG C., quenching in water or oil, and either reheating for a similar time to 100-200 DEG C., and quenching or air-cooling, or ageing at ordinary temperature for several days. In making the alloy, the cobalt may be added as an aluminium-cobalt alloy containing 10 per cent of cobalt.
