Abstract

A magnesium-base alloy of good creep strength has the following composition: .Th.0,5 - 8.per cent .Mn.0,2 - 2.per cent .Mg the remainder... In making the alloy Mg is melted in a steel melting pot under a saline flux such as one composed of KCl 58 parts, CaCl2 28 parts, Ba Cl2 12,5 parts and Ca F2 2,5 parts and is held at about 700 DEG C. Th and Mn are added in either order in metallic form, or Mn may be added as a reducible compound such as the chloride. The Specification refers to heat treatment of the alloys at 1050 DEG F. for 24 hours followed by heating at 400 DEG F. for 6 hours, and also to the treatment of extruded test bars at 400 DEG F. for 16 hours.
