Abstract
A Mg-base alloy consists of 0.2 to 1.2 per cent Zn; 0.4 to 0.8 per cent Zr; 0.1 to 0.75 per cent Th; 0.1 to 1.0 per cent of rare earth metal selected from Ce, La, Pr, Nd, and mischmetal; and the balance Mg; the Zr in the alloy being soluble in HCl on subjecting the alloy to the acid. Preferably mischmetal having 35 to 80 per cent Ce is employed as the rare earth metal component. The alloy may be made by melting together the components in a crucible and protected from the atmosphere by a saline flux covering, the flux being free from MgCl2 and composed of 57 per cent KCl, 28 per cent CaCl2, 12.5 per cent BaCl2, 2.5 per cent CaF2. The resulting alloy may also be refined by stirring the molten alloy with additional flux. The alloy may be hot rolled, annealed at 800-850 DEG F., cold rolled, and finally annealed at 500 DEG F. for a hard tember or at 800 DEG F. for a soft temper. Specifications 637,040 and 664,819 are referred to.
