Abstract

Zinc alloy for plates, strips, pipes, rods and valves has a composition in the range Ti 0.05-0.5% one or more of Be,Li,Mg 0.003-0.1% Zn the remainder The alloy may also contain less than 0.01% of Fe and/or Al, 0.1-1.7% of Cu and up to 0.4% of Mn. The alloy may be hot worked, then cold worked at temperatures below 150 DEG C.,e.g.20-80 DEG C., by rolling, pressing, drawing, hammering etc., and finally annealed at a temperature above 150 DEG C.,e.g.200-350 DEG C. In making the alloy the Ti may be added in the powder form or as a sponge obtained e.g. by the reduction of TiCl4 with Mg. If sponge Ti is used from which the excess Mg and MgCl2 have not been entirely removed it also acts as a source of Mg for the alloy and the MgCl2 acts as a protective slag in the melt.
