Abstract

1,265,406. Consolidating scrap; extruding. MANNESMANN A.G. 16 June, 1969 [9 July, 1968], No. 30356/69. Headings B3H and B3P. [Also in Divisions C6-C7] A profiled article is made by extruding a block of compressed metal chips of nickelchromium-iron alloy at a temperature above the recrystallization temperature of the metal while protecting the metal from oxidation. The chips can be flakes or fibres and the article can be wire or tube. The volume of the chips is 60-85% of the volume of the block. The chips are cleaned to remove impurities although fats , oils &c. which vaporize on heating need not be removed. The chips are then preferably oxidized by annealing in air. After compaction the block is annealed in a vacuum or reducing atmosphere and may be subjected to carburization or nitriding. Metal powder may be added to the chips with an adhesive, e.g. stearic acid or molasses. The powder may be up to 80% of the volume of the chips and may be the same metal as the chips, e.g. copper, nickel or soft iron. In one example 18/8 Cr/Ni steel chips are compacted, welded in a soft iron casing and extruded at 1200‹ C. In a second example the chips are mixed with steel power. The composition of the powder may be slightly different to that of the chips. The extruded product may be further reduced.
