Abstract

1318965 Rare-earth intermetallic compounds GENERAL ELECTRIC CO 7 Aug 1970 [13 Aug 1969] 38197/70 Heading C1A [Also in Divisions C7 and H1] Rare earth intermetallic compounds are obtained by heating a particulate mixture of a rare-earth metal oxide, calcium hydride and Co, Fe, Mn/Co/Fe alloys, Co/Fe alloys, mixtures of Co and Fe, Co/Mn alloys, Co/Mn mixtures or mixtures of Fe/Co/Mn, to effect reduction of the oxide and then heating to diffuse the resulting rare-earth metal into the other metal. Alternatively the oxide may be pre-reduced by heating with calcium hydride to at least 850‹ C. and the product heated with the other metals to give the intermetallic compound. Further alternatively the rare-earth metal oxide, and the metal or alloy in the form of its oxide are heated with sufficient calcium hydride to reduce all the oxides followed by heating to diffuse the resulting metals together. The calcium hydride may may be present in excess or formed in situ by heating a calcium compound in a reducing atmosphere.
