Abstract

1457697 Making electrical rod and wire SOUTHWIRE CO 23 July 1974 [5 March 1974] 32541/74 Addition to 1263495 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A method of making aluminium alloy rod or wire comprises casting an alloy containing 0À30 to less than 0À45 wt. per cent Fe and 0À015 to 0À150 wt. per cent Si into a bar, and hot working the bar to obtain a conductivity of at least 61% IACS. Trace elements include V, Mn, Zn, B, Ti as 0À004 to 0À150 wt. per cent. The alloy is continuously cast using a casting wheel and endless belt arrangement and hot worked by rolling to form a rod having a conductivity of less than 61% IACS. The rod is then drawn, with no preliminary or intermediate anneals, to form wire whose conductivity is still less than 61% IACS. The wire is then annealed or partially annealed to obtain wire having a conductivity of at least 61% IACS and FeAl 3 inclusions with a particle size of less than 2000Š.
