Abstract

1537523 Making electrical conductors SOUTHWIRE CO 3 March 1976 [12 March 1975 (2)] 08575/76 Heading B3A [Also in Division C7] A method of preparing an aluminium base alloy electrical conductor comprises:- (a) alloying from more than 0À15 to 1À00 weight per cent silicon, from 0À10 to 0À95 weight per cent iron with the balance of aluminium containing trace elements selected from the group consisting of copper, manganese, magnesium, titanium, vanadium, and zinc wherein the individual concentrations of the trace elements do not exceed 0À05 weight per cent and the total concentrations of the trace elements does not exceed 0À15 weight per cent; (b) casting the alloy in a moving mould formed between a groove in the periphery of a rotating casting wheel and a belt to form an aluminium base alloy for having iron-aluminium-silicon intermetallic precipitates formed therein; and (c) hot-rolling the bar immediately after casting to form a rod, the rolling breaking-up and evenly dispersing the precipitates throughout the aluminium matrix and forming precipitate particles have a size of less than one micron across their transverse axes. After rolling, the rod is drawn through a series of wiredrawing discs without any preliminary or intermediate anneals to form a wire, and thereafter the wire is annealed. Examples are given together with tensile strength and percentage IACS conductivity, &c.
