Abstract

A magnesium-base alloy has a composition, in per cent by weight, within the following range: Th 1.0-4.0, Mn 0.1-1.5, Zn 0.1-0.3. Rare earth metals 0-4.0 Mg the balance. The alloy may be made by melting the Mg in the presence of a flux containing 34%KCl, 7-10% BaCl2, 9-12% CaF2, 27-31% MgCl2 and 10-13% MgO, heating the melt within the range 1350 DEG F.-1400 DEG F., adding Mn and then Th in the form of an alloy with Mg containing 28% Th, and adding Zn as the metal or as an alloy with Mg. Rare earth metals, if used, may be added before or after the other elements. The melt is stirred, about 0.5% of Zr may be added, e.g. as an alloy with Mg, and the melt is allowed to settle to remove impurities and flux. Reference is made to the production of alloy sheet by heating ingots to 900-950 DEG F., hot rolling to sheet form, annealing at 900 DEG F. or 1000 DEG F., quenching in water, cold rolling to the final thickness and heat treating at 715 DEG F. for 1 hour or at 500 DEG F. for 8 hours.
