Abstract

A magnesium base alloy consists of at least 85 per cent of Mg and from 0.5-6 per cent of rare earth metals of which at least 50 per cent consists of Sm. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements:-Mn up to 2.0 per cent, Al up 2.0 per cent, Ca up to 0.2 per cent, Th up to 10.0 per cent, Hg up to 10.0 per cent, Be up to 0.1 per cent, Zn up to 10.0 per cent, Cd up to 10.0 per cent, Ag up to 5.0 per cent, Cu up to 2.0 per cent, Pb up to 1.0 per cent, Tl up to 5.0 per cent, Li up to 15.0 per cent. La, if present, is preferably less than 10 per cent of the rare earth metals. The alloy may contain 0.4 to 0.9 per cent of Zr, in which case the alloy should be substantially free from Al and Mn and the maximum proportion of Hg is then 5.0 per cent.
