A magnesium-base alloy of high tensile strength and fine grain size has a composition within the following range: .Zn.5.0 - 7.0.per cent .Rare earth metals.0.1 - 1.0.per cent .Mu.0.3 - 0.7.per cent .Al.less than 0.1.per cent .Fe.0.01 - 0.1.per cent .Te.0.01 - 0.1.per cent .Mg the balance... The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements: .Th.not exceeding 0.1.per cent .Si.not exceeding 0.05.per cent .Cd.not exceeding 2.0.per cent .Pb.not exceeding 0.5.per cent .Ag.not exceeding 0.5.per cent .Hg.not exceeding 0.5.per cent .Sn.not exceeding 0.5.per cent .Be.0.0001 - 0.05.per cent The alloy is preferably used in the form of a fully heat-treated casting.
