Abstract
Grain refinement of a lead-base alloy for use as a grid in lead-acid accumulators, is effected by the addition of a rare earth metal such as cerium or mischmetal to the molten alloy. The alloy, which has a fine equi-axed grain structure, has the following composition:-rare earth metal, such as cerium 0.01 to 0.1 per cent calcium 0.03 to 0.1 per cent; aluminium 0.01 to 0.1 per cent; tin 1.0 to 2.0 per cent. The alloy may also contain silver 0.1 to 0.5 per cent in which case, the quantity of tin must be 0.4 to 0.6 per cent, and the balance is lead. Specification 712,798 is referred to.
