A copper based alloy comprises Cu 60-88%, Pb 0-4%, the balance, apart from incidental impurities, being zinc and one or more of the following within the ranges shown: .Mg.0.01.-0.3% .Ca.0.001.-0.05% .Na.0.0001.-0.0005% .Rare earths.0.12.-0.16% The rare earth mixtures are rich in La and/or Ce and are preferably Misch metal.
