Abstract
A magnesium base alloy consists of at least 85 per cent of magnesium and from 0.5-10 per cent of rare earth metals of which neodymium constitutes at least 50 per cent and in which lanthanum and cerium, if present, do not exceed 25 per cent separately or together, the balance, if any, being praseodymium and small quantities of samarium and traces of elements of the yttrium group or fare earth metals. The alloy may also contain one or more of the following elements:-Mn up to 2 per cent, Al up to 2 per cent, Ca up to 0.2 per cent. Th up to 10 per cent, Hg up to 10 per cent, Be up to 0.1 per cent, Zn up to 10 per cent, Cd up to 10 per cent, Ag up to 5 per cent, Cu up to 2 per cent, Pb up to 1 per cent, Tl up to 5 per cent, In up to 5 per cent, Li up to 15 per cent. If the alloy is substantially free from manganese and aluminium it may contain 0.4-0.9 per cent of zirconium in a form which together with the magnesium which contains it, is soluble in an equeous solution of hydrochloric acid.
