Abstract

A magnesium-base alloy has a composition within the following range in per cent by weight. .Th.0.5-8.0 .Mn.0.2-2.0 .Zr.0.001-0.5 .Mg.the balance The Mg is melted with a flux such as one composed of 50 parts KCl, 30 parts BaCl2, 15 parts MgCl2 and 5 parts CaF2, the other metals are added and the melt stirred for 10-20 minutes. A refining flux such as one composed of 95% BaCl2 and 5% CaF2 is added and the melt stirred, the melt is allowed to settle and the alloy poured and cast. Specification 749,167 is referred to.
