Abstract

Magnesium alloys may be used in cast or wrought form have compositions in the following range in per cent by weight. Zr 0.05-0.5; Mn 0.15-0.5; Zn 0-1.25; Th 0-less than 1.0; Rare earth metals 0-3.0; Be 0-0.01; Pb 0-1.0; Cu 0-0.5; Mg the remainder. The alloys may be made by adding to molten magnesium zirconium in excess of that required followed by manganese, e.g. as an alloy of magnesium with 1.5 per cent manganese. The manganese may be added in excess before the zirconium or the two may be added together as a master alloy prepared by co-reduction of ZrCl4 and MnCl2 by magnesium.
