Abstract

1,100,783. Electromagnetic stirring. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA A.B. 19 May, 1965 [20 May, 1964], No. 21159/65. Heading B1C. [Also in Division H5] In a vacuum furnace for degassing molten metal an inductor unit 1 for heating and stirring the metal is removably connected by a vacuum tight seal 14 across an opening 2 in the furnace body, the unit having a metal casing enclosing a molten metal channel communicating, through the opening, with the furnace hearth, the unit being adapted to stir molten metal in the channel. The unit 1 comprises a three part casing 3, 4, 5 with a central opening 17 for an iron-cored induction coil (30), Fig. 5 (not shown) and a melting loop 18 enclosed in ceramic material 3. Parts 4, 5 are separated by electrically insulating sealing connection 19 to prevent the formation of a closed secondary circuit around the casing outside the melt and parts 5, 6 are joined with a seal 20. Cooling loops (24), Fig. 3 (not shown) are provided adjacent the melting loop. Units can be interchanged by tipping or rotating the furnace to dispose the unit above the level of the melt in the furnace.
