Abstract

1,133,162. Electro-magnetic stirrers. ALLMANNA SVENSKA ELEKTRISKA AB. 11 March, 1966 [13 March, 1965], No. 10724/66. Heading B1C. An electric induction furnace has a hearth I and an inductor unit comprising a melt channel 2 embracing an induction heating coil 4 on an iron core 3; a single, 2- or polyphase stirrer to promote circulation through the channel 2 is placed outside the refractory furnace lining 5 at 6, 7 and/or 8. The stirrer may be coil wound, or plane wound in the manner of the stator of an asynchronous machine; it may be excited at mains frequency or at a lower frequency, which in the case of a polyphase stirrer may be 0.4 to 10 c.p.s. The stirrer is air or water cooled. In another embodiment (Figs. 3 and 4 not shown) the inductor unit is detachable; there are two heating coils with an additional channel between them; the leakage flux may be concentrated by laminations (27); and a shield (24) of non-ferromagnetic material extends along the inside of the magnetic casing of the unit and outside the stirrer to protect it from the influence of the main flux. The device may be constructed as a vacuum furnace or placed in an evacuated enclosure, when the stirrer and/or coil and yoke of the inductor unit are preferably under atmospheric pressure to avoid glow discharges.
