Abstract

In a zone melting metallurgical vacuum furnace the molten metal (7) is stirred by a single-phase AC electromagnet having shaded poles (2) encompassing the graphite ladle (6). The poles have short-circuited copper pole-shading rings (4). The split poles and rings may be assymmetrically arranged to increase the stirring effect. A quartz vacuum tube (5) surrounds the ladle and there are heating coils (10) and a thermal screen (11). A conventional arrangement in which the ladle is successively surrounded by heating coils, thermal insulation, a water-cooled screen and three-phase stirring coils is described (Fig. 3).
