523,435. Metallurgical induction furnaces. TIGERSCHIOLD, K. M., and SAHLIN, B. I. Jan. 6, 1939, No. 529. Convention date, March 30, 1938. [Class 39 (iii)] [Also in Group II] In carrying out metallurgical reactions under the influence of electric induction, the molten charge passes continuously through one or more low frequency coils. The metal is conveyed from a furnace 1 to a ladle 4 by an open trough or eddy current runner A, and the part surrounded by coils B is of larger cross-section than the remainder in order to delay the passage of metal therethrough. The coils may be separate from the eddy current runner and may be transported, with or without the runner, to different furnaces. In modification, the trough is replaced by a crucible C which may be fitted with additional coils 7 around the outlet 5. The runner may be provided with a mantle or reinforcement of non-magnetic material such as austenitic steel.
