Abstract
1,027,216. Resistance heating elements. H. FEICHTINGER. June 6, 1964, No. 23517/64. Heading H5H. [Also in Division B1] A resistance furnace for degassing metal specimens (see Division B1) comprises a graphite tube 1 (Fig. 1), surrounded by a resistance element 5 having a stepped construction to obtain zones of different temperatures and in turn surrounded by thermal insulation (powdered graphite) 7 supported by wall 6. A water jacket 8 is provided and heating current is supplied to said element 5 from terminals 18, 19, passing inter alia through the water jacket. It is stated that heating of the water is effected by using A.C. of low voltage and higher amperage. In an alternative form of furnace (Fig. 2, not shown), the furnace tube is surrounded by heat insulating material (7) filling a jacket (22) of non-magnetic material, which is in turn surrounded by a water-cooled coil (23) to effect inductive heating of the furnace. The upper and lower parts ( 20, 21) of the furnace are watercooled.
