Abstract
1,150,459. Casting processes; moulds. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION AND CONSARC CORP. 7 Dec., 1967 [9 Dec., 1966], No. 55369/66. Heading B3F. In an electroslag process for refining the metal of a consumable electrode 6, slag melted in a furnace 1 is passed by gas pressure through a conduit 4 passing through a base-plate 2 of the externally-cooled C.I. or copper mould 5. When the slag reaches the energized electrode 6, discharge between the mould and electrode begins and the electrode melts. Slag in the conduit 4 is then allowed to cool and solidify to form a seal. The slag is melted with the conduit 4 (which may be welded to the internally cooled mould base-plate 2) clear of the slag while it is melted in the induction, arc or resistance furnace 1 The conduit 4 may be slidably sealed in a furnace lid to enable the relative movement of furnace and conduit to take place or rigidly sealed in a lid which is placed on the furnace when the slag is to be passed to the mould. The mould, base-plate 2 and conduit 4 may be raised to be clear of the slag before starting.
