Abstract

1,103,350. Casting processes. INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKI IMENI E. O. PATONA. 16 Nov., 1965, No. 48549/65. Heading B3F. In a method of electroslag casting, a consumable electrode 9 is located in a water-cooled mould 5 open at both ends, the mould and electrode being moved towards each other during melting and subsequent casting so that a continuously cast ingot emerges from the bottom of the mould. Initially, the mould bottom is closed by a water-cooled plate 7 carrying a fusible member 8 of the same material as that to be cast. When the electric current is switched on, the electrode 9 melts n the mould 5 and is moved progressively downwards and when a predetermined level of metal has been reached, the lower portion of which has commenced to solidify, the mould is moved upwards towards the electrode so as to permit a solidified cast ingot to emerge from the bottom end of the mould carried on the plate 7. The speeds of the mould and electrode are related to rate of melting and the electric current supplied.
