Abstract

1,261,832. Casting processes; continuous casting; making ingots. INSTITUT ELEKTROSVARKIIM. E.O.PATONA. 22 Jan., 1969, No. 3545/69. Headings B3A and B3F. A consumable electrode 1 is melted by the electroslag process in a mould 2 containing a cooled core 4 so that there is cast a hollow ingot for subsequent processing, as by pressing or rolling, into pipes etc., the top 8 of the core being maintained in the molten slag, as the ingot grows, (1) by lifting of the core by a mechanism 10, (2) by lowering of the mould bottom plate 3 with the ingot, in a continuous casting process, Fig. 2 (not shown), or (3) by lowering the mould 2 together with the bottom plate and ingot, Fig. 3 (not shown). The molten slag is poured in at the top of the mould 2 or through an inlet 5 at the bottom. An A.C. or D.C. supply 9 is connected to the core 4, mould 2 and electrode 1; the latter may be fed into the slag bath or be stationary, being secured on the mould as shown, with insulation by a packing 7. In methods (1) and (3), screw clamps retain the mould and bottom plate together. Sensors are used to facilitate control of the relative height of the core 4. To improve the ingot inner surface, the core may be reciprocated by a mechanism 16 and/or rotationally oscillated by a mechanism 17.
