Abstract

1,130,546. Casting processes. INSTITUT ELEKROSVARKI IMENI E. O. PATONA. 10 Nov., 1965, No. 47647/65. Heading B3F. In an electro-slag casting process, slag is placed in the bottom of a mould 1 and is melted by an electrode 3, molten metal is then poured into the mould from a ladle 4 and is reheated by the electrode to control the solidification of the cast metal to promote further refining of the casting. To assist in the initial melting of the slag a dummy plate 2 is located on the cooled bottom of the mould, the dummy plate 2 being of the same composition as the metal to be cast. The electrodes may be consumable or non- consumable and may be solid or hollow, the latter permitting the introduction of the molten metal into the mould without having to remove the electrode during the pouring operation. When casting large ingots the pouring and reheating of the metal may be carried out in stages with reheating being effected after each successive pouring. The mould may or may not be cooled.
