[Also in Division H5] A metal ingot, acting as a consumable electrode, is remelted by an electroslag refining process in which the electrode is held stationary relative to a cooled mould during melting and in which slag is added to the molten slag pool in the mould to maintain the electrode tip immersed in the slag. A tapered mould 1 and tapered electrode 10 are connected to a power source by contacts 7, 12, feeders 8, 13 and bus-bars 9, 14. The electrode is supported by a projection 11 on two half-ring contact plates 7 which rest upon an insulating plate 6. Molten slag is poured through a funnel 3 into the mould bottom to form a slag pool and the current is switched on. Further molten slag can be added to the space between the electrode and mould intermittently. Slag addition can also be effected by filling the space with powdered slag, or with molten slag that is allowed to solidify, so that as the slag pool moves up through the mould the solid slag melts. On completion of the refining, mould halves la, 1b (not shown) are separated and the refined ingot withdrawn. A cylindrical or prismatic electrode 22 (Fig. 5) and mould 21 can be used but the electrode cross-sectional area should be at least 9/10 of that of the mould. The refined ingot is removed on a lowerable base 27.
