Abstract
931,528. Casting composite articles. ASSOCIATED ELECTRICAL INDUSTRIES Ltd. Feb. 9, 1962 [Feb. 10, 1961], No. 5124/61. Class 83 (1). An electrical switch contact comprises a metal body cast directly on to a refractory metal tip in a vacuum. A molybdenum or tungsten tip 21 is located within a graphite container 1 by a graphite ring 22 beneath a graphite two-piece mould 5, 6 located within the container by pins 11. The space above the mould forms a reservoir for molten copper 24 which flows into the mould through a gate 8. The upper part of the container is surrounded by a polished molybdenum sheet 16 which together with the greater thickness of the wall portion 15 reduces heat loss therefrom so that the copper solidifies from the bottom of the mould upwardly. When an alloy of copper and 0.6% Cr is used for the contact body, those parts of the mould which come into contact with it are made of pyrophyllite. Solid copper is placed in the container which is then placed in a vacuum in a radiation or induction furnace to melt the copper. In a modification the molten copper from the reservoir 12 flows through feed holes in a graphite plate to mould cavities in a lower graphite block in each of which cavities a tip is located. After casting each contact body is detached by breaking the small neck extending through the corresponding feed hole.
