Abstract

1,173,693. Casting processes; moulds. BRITISH IRON & STEEL RESEARCH ASSOCIATION. 1 March, 1968 [1 March, 1967], No. 9616/67. Heading B3F. In a method of electroslag refining of metals, molten slag is introduced into the mould in which the refined metal is to be cast, through the wall and adjacent the base of the mould. The electrode of the metal to be refined is connected to a power supply before the pouring of the slag is completed and is positioned within the mould at the height to which the molten slag will rise after pouring. On completion of the slag pouring, downward movement of the electrode into the slag is commenced, thus melting the electrode. A mould 1 is cooled by water sprayed from a header pipe 3 and has a water-cooled base 6. The slag-introducing aperture 5 connects to a pipe 4 which has a socket. 8, 9. A graphite slag-delivery pipe 7, having a graphite tundish 12, can be inserted into the socket 8, 9 to deliver the molten slag to the mould. After pouring the slag, the aperture 5 is sealed by freezing the slag in the pipe 4, or by inserting a water-cooled mandrel (not shown).
