Abstract
1288276 Casting processes; moulds VSESOJUZNY NAUCHNO-ISSLEDOVATELSKY INSTITUT ELEKTROTERMICHESKOGO OBORUDUVANIA 19 Nov 1969 56639/69 Heading B3F [Also in Division H5] In a mould for casting a hollow ingot, molten metal (from the melting of consumable electrodes or poured in through hollow electrodes 2 or around solid electrodes) passes through molten slag for refining; the wall 3, bottom 4 and a mandrel 5 are water-jacketed for cooling and electrodes entering the mould are mounted in holders 7. The slag, melted elsewhere, is kept molten by the electrodes. The mould cavity and mandrel 5 taper upwardly. The electrodes are raised as the mould fills, or the mould may be lowered. After solidification the wall 3 is raised and the hollow ingot lifted. In a modification, the mandrel (9) has a spigot base for insertion into the mould bottom (8) and the mould wall and mandrel, being interconnected, are raised off together to provide access to the ingot.
