Abstract

1451924 Continuous casting MITSUBISHI JUKOGYO KK 16 Aug 1973 [28 Aug 1972] 38860/73 Heading B3F Consumable electrodes 1, having a total cross-sectional area greater than that of the metal of an article M cast therefrom in a mould 2, are fed into a slag bath S in a portion 3 of the mould, heated by non-consumable electrodes 5 as well as the electrodes 1 to be melted to form a molten pool 4, mainly in a mould portion which has a greater volume per unit height (because of diverging wall portions as shown) than the volume per unit height of the casting cavity of the mould. The electrodes 1 may be in radially-adjacent pairs. The mould 2 is water-cooled and as shown is annular, consisting of an outer ring 2a around a ring 2b, to cast a tubular body M. Pressure vessel bodies or solid bodies may be cast. To collect non-floating impurities from the slag bath S, a groove (11) may be formed in each level portion which extends between the sloping sides of the bath portion 3 and those of the part containing the molten pool 4. Separately-prepared molten slag is poured into the bath portion 3 at the beginning. The increased heating, by the non-consumable electrodes 5, is said to provide an increased casting rate and since the electrodes 5 may be moved horizontally, e.g. oscillated horizontally, with or without the electrodes 1, the heating is more uniform and powdered slag can be added without lowering of the temperature of the bath S. A slag film 10 is formed on each side of the casting M to improve the surface. The electricity supplies to 8, 9 to the consumable electrodes 1 and the non-consumable electrodes 5, respectively, are each connected to a casting starter 6 supported by raising and lowering means 7.
