Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent the high temp. cracking of deposited metal by filling a molten slag bath and a molten bath in the cavity made by piercing away the unsound part in the center of a large sized steel ingot and electromagnetically stirring the same.
CONSTITUTION: A hollow cast ingot 6 which is pierced away of an unsound part is disposed on a molding board 5, and molten slag 2 is filled in this hollow. Next, electricity is conducted between a cunsumable electrode 7 and the board 5 via the slag 2, thereby melting the electrode 7. At this time, the molten slag bath 2 and molten metal bath 3 are electromagnetically stirred by the melting current and an electromagnetic coil 4. Thence, the molten metal begins to solidify from the boundary part of the hollow cast ingot, thereby forming the composite cast ingot. In this way, no high temp. cracking occurs in deposited metal 8, and since the temps. of the baths 2, 3 are made uniform by the electromagnetic stirring, the penetration in the circumferential direction of the hollow cast ingot 6 is made uniform as well.
