Abstract

PURPOSE: To prevent occurrences of shrinkage cavities in castings when steel ingots or castings are manufactured, by applying an electromagnetic rabbling by an electromagnetic rabbling machine installed at a location near the maximum molten metal supplying distance of a feeder head to a molten metal at the solidifying stage.
CONSTITUTION: An electromagnetic rabbling machine 4 is installed at a location near the maximum molten metal supplying distance of a feeder head 1, and an electromagnetic rabbling is applied to a molten metal at the solidifiying stage of a casting 2 by the electromagnetic rabbling machine 4. By this electromagnetic rabbling action, the solidifying condition at each location of the casting 2 is changed and the supply of the molten metal is secured until the solidication of the whole casting 2 is completed. Occurrences of shrinkage cavities 3 are also prevented. Moreover, by this method the molten metal supplying distance can be increased and the amount of feeder head and the number of chiller can be reduced.
