Abstract
PURPOSE:To prevent the roughening of the casting surfaces of the inside surfaces of a hollow billet on account of inclusion of the oxides of molten metal into the billet in supplying molten metal between a mold and a mandrel and casting the billet continuously, by giving vibrations to the mandrel. CONSTITUTION:A water cooled mandrel 2 is inserted into a water cooled mold 1 provided with a riser 8, and molten metal M such as Al alloy is charged into the space between both from a molten metal supply spout 10, and while it is cooled to solidify, a bottom base 4 is lowered, whereby a hollow billet 5 of the Al alloy is cast continuously. In this case, the metallic oxides on the surface of the cast molten metal M are included into the inside surface of the hollow part of the hollow billet in the meniscus part and the surface roughening owing to the oxides is generated on the inside surface of the hollow part. In order to prevent this 20-2,000 cycles/min vibrations are applied to the mandrel 2 by a vibration generator 7, whereby the inclusion of the oxides is prevented and the surface roughening of the inside casting surfaces of the hollow billet is prevented.
